PHOTO ALBUMS

This is a ledger style binding (my name for stab binding). It was done as a commission for Heide Yount, a photographer in Castro Valley, CA.

I braided wool yard to make the cord for the stitching at the spine. The stitch pattern is my own invention just for this project

Stab bindings are very common for hand made albums but I've never thought they were very functional. They depend on the flexibility of the pages as they open, and even under the best conditions, there is a large curve to the open pages. I wonder how well this operates once images are mounted on the pages. Especially if photo corners are used.
To overcome this deficiency and allow the pages of this album to open flat, I've developed the True Step™ album with hinged and staggered pages. The spine thickness is double the thickness of the pages to allow room for the photos without pushing the covers open.

This view of the fore edge of the book (with the front cover open) shows the way the pages step back.
